Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Headlights and brake lights
With your car turned on and parked, have someone walk around to see that your lights are working – headlights, brake and tail lights, turn signals, etc.
Replacing bulbs in today’s vehicles can be a challenge. Have a mechanic do the job, particularly replacing and aiming headlights. A pro also knows if the problem is a blown fuse, not a burned out bulb.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Transmission fluid
Checking the automatic transmission fluid is another vital item on the car maintenance checklist. Look for a reservoir marked ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and follow the same steps as monitoring the oil level – only this time, with the engine running. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for change intervals, about every 30,000 miles.

Mazda CX-5 named Japan's Car of The Year
Mazda Motor Corporation's compact crossover SUV, the CX-5 has been named the 2012-2013 Car of the Year Japan. The award was announced by the Japan Car of the Year committee on November 29, 2012.
The CX-5 was the first model to adopt the full range of Mazda's SKYACTIV* technologies including new engines, transmissions, body and chassis. It offers a predictable and refined driving experience together with outstanding environmental and safety performance. It is also the first model to fully embody Mazda's new design theme, KODO - Soul of Motion. With finely-honed vitality and dynamism, its styling is reminiscent of a cheetah about to pounce on its prey.
The CX-5 equipped with Mazda's new-generation SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine boasts powerful driving comparable to a 4.0-litre V8 gasoline engine vehicle thanks to 420 Nm of maximum torque. At the same time, it achieves an SUV class-topping fuel consumption of 4.6 l/100 km with only 119 g/km of CO2 emissions.
In approximately nine months since sales of the CX-5 started in February, Mazda has received 37,000 orders in Japan, more than 33,000 in Europe and over 128,000 globally, and sales continue to be strong.
All passenger vehicles with an expected annual sales volume of over 500 units, announced or launched in Japan between November 1, 2011 and October 31, 2012 are eligible for this year's Japan Car of the Year award. The last Mazda to be named the Car of the Year Japan was the MX-5 in 2005. The CX-5 is the fourth Mazda to win the award.
Executive Officer Kiyoshi Fujiwara commented, "We are thrilled to have the CX-5 receive such a coveted award and appreciate the warm support and encouragement of our fans. Spurred on by this honour, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to the task of crafting cars that only Mazda can, in order to continue winning the support of our fans and customers into the future."

MAZDA TO SHOWCASE MULTIPLE NORTH AMERICAN DEBUTS IN LOS ANGELES
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today confirmed the announcement of several North American vehicle debuts at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. The all-new 2014 Mazda6 mid-size sedan, updated 2014 CX-5 compact SUV and face-lifted 2013 CX-9 mid-size SUV will make their first continental appearances. All vehicles are scheduled to be on sale this winter. A global debut from Mazda Motorsports as well as official timing and vehicle application for the U.S.-destined SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine also will share the stage.
"It's definitely an exciting time for the Zoom-Zoom brand," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "The long-awaited, redesigned 2014 Mazda6 will naturally receive much interest but let's not take away from our strong SUV lineup in the CX-5 and CX-9, which are segment leaders in their own right. Motorsports, an innate part of Mazda's soul, will have important news to share and last but most certainly not least SKYACTIV-D will be here. I have no doubt that consumers will look at Mazda's upcoming lineup with wide eyes, stirred hearts and driving inspiration."
Taking nearly identical design cues from the TAKERI Concept, the 2014 Mazda6 follows in the all-new footsteps and clean-sheet-of-paper approach of CX-5 to become the second production vehicle to feature the full breadth of the KODO "Soul of Motion" design language and also fully incorporate SKYACTIV®[1] TECHNOLOGY. Mazda6 will feature a new SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine as well as new-to-market technologies in the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system, an automated safety feature designed to mitigate front-end collisions at low speeds, and i-ELOOP, a Mazda-developed capacitor-based brake energy regeneration system for improved fuel economy.
The 2014 CX-5 also will receive the SCBS system, which will be available as part of an upgraded Technology Package for Touring and Grand Touring models. At this time, CX-5 will not be equipped with i-ELOOP.
Both the 2014 CX-5 and 2014 Mazda6 will go on sale in January 2013.
Available at Mazda dealerships now, the 2013 CX-9 receives a mid-cycle facelift, immediately evident in its familial KODO design enhancements to the front and rear fascia. The three-row, seven-passenger SUV stalwart also becomes even more tech savvy with Mazda's next-generation audio and infotainment system that includes a 5.8-inch color multi-information touch screen display, updated Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity, a TomTom technology-based in-dash navigation system, HD Radio™ Technology, Pandora® and Short Message Service (SMS) audio receipt and delivery.
Mazda Motorsports will unveil an all-new competition race car which will make its motorsports debut in January at the 2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona, the premier motorsports endurance race in the United States. The vehicle will be equipped with a turbocharged SKYACTIV-D 2.2L, making it the first diesel-powered competitor in the 51-year history of the 24-hour race. Upon build-completion, the diesel racing engine remained 63 percent OEM stock. Mazda will be seeking its 24th motorsports class win.
More information on Mazda's Los Angeles Auto Show vehicle debuts as well as updates on its global business plans will be announced during a press conference on Thursday, November 29. The presentation will begin at 9:30 AM PST and will be held at the Mazda display booth located in the Los Angeles Convention Center's South Hall.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Brakes and brake fluid
Check to ensure that brake fluid levels are within tolerance. How often you need to replace brake pads or other components depends on how you drive and typical driving conditions. Warning signs of a brake problem include noise, vibration or “grabbing” when you apply the brakes. Working on your brakes is a job probably best left to the professionals.

Power steering fluid
Power steering fluid should be changed every three years or 50,000 miles. If you have a power steering fluid reservoir, check the level visually; otherwise, follow the dipstick method. Low power steering fluid may indicate a leak, so have your mechanic take a look.

Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain pass the 1 million sales mark
GM’s Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs have both surpassed the 1 million sales mark. A quicksilver metallic 2013 GMC Terrain Denali drove off the assembly line at GM’s CAMI plant this week, marking 1 million vehicles produced on the architecture.
Both models were launched in 2009 as 2010 models and since then the two have grown in sales every year. Sales have more than doubled from 138,248 units in 2009 to 283,491 units in 2011. Through the first 9 months of 2012, GM leads the small SUV segment in sales, ahead of the Honda CR-V, the Kia Sportage/Hyundai Tucson and the Ford Escape.
“Small SUVs attract buyers with diverse personal preferences but a common need for space and versatility,” said Alan Batey, vice president of GM Sales, Service and Marketing. “With Equinox and Terrain, we can deliver on those core attributes while offering two very different design and packaging propositions. Chevrolet and GMC are both stronger brands with these vehicles in their showrooms.”

Car battery maintenance tips for extended life
Your car's battery is the heart of its electrical system and the chief cause of winter weather start-up woes. In cold weather, the battery loses about half its strength while the demands on the battery increase. Low temperatures reduce the battery's engine-cranking power, and by thickening the engine oil, they also make it more difficult for your engine to turn over. Cold fuel doesn't vaporize well, which adds to the difficulty.
Almost all private and public vehicles that we see on major and provincial roads use battery for their electrical needs. Radio, lights, horn and the ignition system is dependent on the battery which is a component of the vehicle’s electrical system.
Some may be wondering why the vehicle’s battery doesn’t drain off quickly despite continuous and repeated use. This is because vehicles have their own charging system composed mainly of the alternator and voltage regulator. The charging system ensures that the battery is continuously charged every time the engine is running.
The most common type of battery vehicles use is the lead acid-type battery. These types of batteries have lead and lead oxide plates submerged in about 35 percent sulfuric acid and 65 percent water solution, creating a chemical reaction. The product of this chemical reaction is electricity.
Most often than not, drivers put tap water on batteries, unaware of its negative effects. Tap water has minerals that can ruin battery function, which would eventually slow down the electricity generation. It is necessary to use distilled or de-mineralized water only on batteries to prevent break down.
Care for car battery
The battery is one of the most important parts of the vehicle that needs continuous check-up and maintenance. It is important to know the appropriate care to extend its operating life and at the same time, proper handling to prevent accidents.
Here are some important tips to consider in battery maintenance:
- First, wear eye, hand protection and the proper clothes are worn if you are going to personally check your battery. Remember, battery contains acid and protective gears can shield you from the corrosive chemicals inside the battery. When battery is mishandled, it may cause burns or more serious injuries. Once you are fully-geared, place the battery properly and make sure that it’s stable, not shaking or rocking when mounted, to avoid any short circuit.
- Check the terminals where the battery cables connect to be sure they are tight and free of corrosion. If corrosion is present, get a qualified technician to clean the terminals.
- The plates must always be submerged in water (distilled or de-mineralized) inside the battery but never over-fill your battery. The water level must not go below the recommended level to prevent rapid deterioration of battery plates. Fill to 1/4" below bottom of split ring (1 1/2" below top). Water should be added after charging. Filling before charging can cause the battery electrolyte to bubble over during charging. If plates are exposed, however, add enough water to cover the plates by 1/8" before charging.
- Don’t use sulfuric acid in refilling the battery, it is recommended to use water only for refilling. The sulfuric acid inside more or less remains the same throughout the battery life. (Some batteries do not require water refilling because they are sealed. These are commonly known as maintenance-free batteries.)
- Change the battery in case you happen to see any cracks, vents or swelled battery casing. Most likely, your battery is gradually failing and replacement is inevitable.
- Also, always make sure that the battery is always clean. Even a small amount of dirt can cause “power leak” causing uncontrolled discharge and electricity loss.
- Make sure the battery is firmly secured to its mounting bracket. An unsecured battery that shifts around can become damaged, and possibly cause short circuits. All exposed metal parts of the terminals and cables should be greased to prevent future corrosion.
- Aside from the battery, you must also check the electrical wirings and cables to ensure that there are no stray strands or damaged insulation (leading to exposed wires) that may cause electrical leaks and short circuits.
- Batteries come in many different sizes. When replacing a car battery, make sure you choose the right size for your car. When it comes to car batteries, bigger is not always better.
- The terminal clamp of the cable must be kept clean. Use a simple solution of baking soda and water in cleaning the terminal clamp especially when you notice the accumulation of white powdery substance around the electrodes. There are times the engine would not start if the battery terminal is corroded.
- In removing or cleaning the battery, remove first (-) ground cable followed by the (+) cable. If you are going to reinstall the battery, the (+) cable must be put first before the (-) ground cable. In this way, we can avoid short circuit if the wrench accidentally touches the grounded part of the vehicle.
- Use warm water and a mild detergent to remove grease and dirt from the plastic surface of the battery. This is important because a layer of dirt can actually act as a conductive agent, causing the battery to constantly discharge slightly.
- Do your part in protecting the environment by simply returning used batteries to battery shops for recycling. Recycling is one good way to reduce pollution.
- Your mechanic can load-test your battery to see if it is capable of sufficient charge on below-freezing days. Replace it if it does not pass the test.
- “The battery is literally the life spark of your car,” says Dave McMullen, director of marketing at EnerSys, makers of Odyssey Dry cell Batteries. “Your automotive winterizing routine should include a full check up and cold-weather prep for your car battery.” If you live in climate that is excessively cold, think about obtaining a battery or engine heater. The heater will help the battery start the car by reducing the power necessary.
- Read your owner's manual before disconnecting your battery to ensure that computer or radio memories are not lost. You may need to enter a password to get these components functioning again. These passwords are normally included with the owner's manual packet that came with your vehicle.
- Always disconnect the battery before doing anything else. Remove the cable from ground first, which is usually the negative terminal. This disconnects the battery from the car’s entire electrical system and minimizes the risk of causing sparks. Then remove the positive terminal connection. Never use a screwdriver to pry off stuck-on battery cable terminals because you could damage connections inside the battery post. Instead, use a battery puller tool to remove cable terminals.
Recharging guidelines for maximum life
- Recharge immediately after each use
- Use battery charger matched to the battery's size
- Do not overcharge; an automatic charger that turns off or on with a timer is your best bet
- Always slow charge a deep cycle battery; never fast charge or boost charge it
- A 10-12 hour charge with the appropriate charger at the correct amp rate will usually bring your battery to a full state of charge from a deep discharge

GM to debut new Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra pickups in December
General Motors plans to reveal its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups Dec. 13 in Detroit, officials said Monday.
The highly anticipated trucks are central to GM's profitability in North America. The Silverado 1500, which hasn't been redesigned since 2006, is easily GM's best-selling vehicle in the U.S. at 298,200 units in the first nine months of the year.
The 2014 Silverado and Sierra are expected to hit showrooms at an unspecified time in 2013. The public will get to see the vehicles in person at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
"The bold exterior design of the new Silverado reflects the enhanced capabilities of the truck while features such as jewel-like, projector beam headlamps showcase the careful attention given to every detail," GM said in a statement.
The Silverado has entered the "final validation" phase and "torture testing," the automaker said earlier this month. The pickup competes against Ford's F-150 series and Chrysler's Ram pickup.
The vehicle will start production in 2013 at the company's plants in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Silao, Mexico.
Silverado marketing manager Tony Truelove said in a recent interview that the new vehicle would balance "performance capability and fuel economy."
"We don't trade off one to get the other. We feel we have a very good overall truck and will continue to improve on that formula for the next generation," Truelove said.

Tighten Your Gas Cap
Is the Check Engine light on? Then make sure the gas cap is on tightly before calling the dealer. No joke, this is one of the most common ways of setting off your car's diagnostic system, since a loose gas cap defeats the fuel system's venting arrangement.

2013 Mazda CX-5 impresses on and off road
Here in Arizona we love our SUV's. And today as we wrapped up our test of the new 2013 Mazda CX-5, we are unabashedly in love with this one. On our cactus studded back roads we took the CX-5 on a journey to shake out how Mazda's new compact SUV really runs, and we were pleasantly impressed.
The all new design is eye catching inside and out. The exterior features Mazda's new Kodo design language which has artfully creased sheet metal that has a natural yet masculine form to it. The look is akin to a cloth draped over furniture, but still has an aggressive look that even truck-centric men can appreciate.
The interior is purposeful and buttoned-down in a way that BMW used to be known for. The dark charcoal leather seats and cabin trims of our Gran Touring test model were handsome and comfortable. The instrument panel, center stack, and controls were laid out with elegant simplicity. Even the touch screen Bose audio system was easy to use and understand.
The seats feel as if they were lifted from a sports car. They had aggressive bolstering that held you tight, even with the slippery leather trim. Adjustments and position were near perfect, offering a commanding SUV-like view. Due to the high seating position however, the shortest of drivers in our office had difficulty adjusting the seat to a perfect spot.
Driving the CX-5 was a pure joy. Of all the compact SUV's we have driven this year, the CX-5 has the sharpest and tightest handling. Steering is perfectly weighted and sharp in response. The chassis is unflappable and sure footed at all times, credibly producing Mazda's Zoom-Zoom theme. It was simply fun to drive in a way that has left most SUV's
The front-wheel drive CX-5 shares the same 155 horsepower 2.0 liter SkyActiv four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission we tested in the Mazda3 sedan earlier this year. The powertrain is highly efficient yet powerful at the same time.
The direct-injected four-cylinder engine offers more than enough power for the CX-5, therefore is the only engine option. No V6 or turbo-charged engine is available as some of its competitors offer. It has a nice sound once warmed up, a bit rough when cold. The six-speed automatic transmission was smooth and predictable, also offering a manual shift mode.
The 2013 Mazda CX-5 as we tested it, is rated at 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, with 29 mpg combined. Our observed fuel economy was dead on the EPA rating, seeing 29.1 mpg in our week of testing. This is a phenomenal number for an SUV, and is only better with the standard six-speed manual which can achieve up to 35 mpg on the highway.
Off road in our Arizona desert we did wish for all-wheel drive on steep un-paved hills. On gravel roads, like most front-wheel drive SUV's, traction was not optimal. The good news is that the CX-5 resists the jittery wheel hop that many of its competitors have in these rougher than shopping mall surfaces. We recommend you option all-wheel-drive if you actually leave the pavement often.
Despite the few small issues we noted, the Mazda CX-5 ranks as one of the vehicles we would buy for our own. It has a near perfect mixture of design, power and handling prowess combined with a killer instinct to sip fuel. We found its sporting feel and driving experience to be refreshing in its class too.
Pricing is also a strong point. Our fully loaded tester, a front-wheel drive 2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring model came in at a total of $27,840 including destination. The Grand Touring includes a number of notable features like the top end Bose audio system, leather interior, 19” alloy wheels, automatic climate control, rear view camera, and heated seats.
Good news is that even if you choose the more frugal base Sport model which starts at $20,995, you still get the great sport inspired interior with cloth seats, solid handling, and the stellar power train. For once, the base model isn't a penalty box.

Oil changes every 3,000 miles used to be required jobs, just like cleaning the accumulated fuzz from record player needles or defrosting freezers. Today, advances in engine design and lubricants make oil changes something to be done when the schedule calls for it, not when granddad says it's time. Some cars call for 5,000-mile change intervals, some up to 15,000-mile stints. Others have a variable timer. Follow the schedule and use the oil called for by the manufacturer.

2013 Chevrolet Spark Test Drive
What’s New: Chevy’s sprightly minicar, the Spark, is a big seller around the globe, but it wasn’t developed with North America in mind. The "old" GM might have shipped the Korean-made tyke over to our shores and hoped for the best. Thankfully for us, the GM of today unleashed a squadron of homeland Detroit engineers onto the Spark to modify and improve the little machine for the U.S.
Under that short hood is an 84-hp, 1.25-liter four-cylinder. That’s .5-liter more than Sparks have in other markets. "The real goal there was to get a flatter, more useable torque curve out of the engine," ride and handling engineer Nathan Sumner says. The team at GM also retuned the intake manifold and the whole exhaust system to give our Spark a sportier sound and optimized the gear ratios in both the five-speed manual and the four-speed automatic with unique gearing for the U.S. market. The original Spark was a soft rider and not what you’d describe as a fun machine when the road twists. To impart a livelier feel, Sumner’s colleagues lowered the car by 10 mm and retuned the suspension bushings and shocks. Anyone who’s spent time in a Smart ForTwo knows how unsettled that car feels at highway speeds. Sumner didn’t want that to be the Spark’s Achilles’ heel, so he minimized the nervousness on the highway by first adding 15-inch wheels and improved tires, then fine-tuning the suspension. "Just a small tweak will make all the difference in the world," Sumner says. "I made one little change to the rear damper tuning, and it just calmed the whole car down. It’s really kind of a black art sometimes, finding just the right balance."
The American Spark also comes with an electronic power-steering system. It provides variable assist based on speed, so the driver can dial in a lighter feel around town and more heft through the wheel as the Spark piles on speed. "When you increase the effort at highways speeds, it makes the car much more stable and less twitchy," Sumner says. GM says it improved the door seals, baffles, carpeting, engine acoustics, and wipers to make the Spark a quieter place to spend time. And the U.S. team enhanced the bodywork for aero. Lowering the Spark and making tweaks such as changing the mirrors gained a little by way of mileage. Sparks equipped with a manual transmission return 34 mpg combined—not exactly hybrid-level fuel sipping but not too shabby. (You’d expect such a small car to go farther than this on a gallon of gas, but here’s an explanation of why it doesn’t.) On the inside, the Spark has 10 airbags as well as a rollover sensing system. A gauge pod reminiscent of the Sonic, the Spark’s bigger brother, sits up front with a large LCD screen in the dash for infotainment. The rear seat on global Sparks seats three people. But that middle seat was deemed too narrow for American posteriors, so a handy console resides in its place, making the car a four-seater. There’s 11.4 cubic feet behind that rear seat and a solid 31.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. Tech Tidbit: Five years ago, Chevy says, infotainment systems ranked about 25th on the wish list of features for car buyers. Today, it’s fourth. And since many Spark customers could very well be the youngest and most tech-savvy folks trolling Chevy stores, the company’s new MyLink infotainment system is being offered in this car first. Already more than 60 percent of the Sparks on the road have the system. MyLink isn’t revolutionary. It simply helps pair your smartphone to the car and offers the usual audio and phone controls as well as a handful of apps. One particular app, BringGo, is a real moneysaver. Spark owners with MyLink can download BringGo to their phones, and the app will display functions on the in-dash screen. So you’ve got a full in-car navigation system at your fingers for just $50.Driving Character: As cute as the Spark may be, especially in colors such as Jalapeno or Techno Pink, we didn’t expect much from behind the wheel. Why? Because the Smart ForTwo is such an awful car to drive, it ruined us for all other minicars. But it only took a few minutes to realize that the Spark outsmarts the Smart.
The Spark’s cabin is airy, open, and feels like a much larger car than it is. When you are in the driver’s seat , there’s almost no evidence that you are, in fact, piloting a minicar—at least until you hit the gas. The Spark isn’t a quick machine. But it’s adequate for around-town cruising and, surprisingly, merging onto the freeway is not a white-knuckle affair. The Spark’s ride is firm and the steering is relatively quick. This combination makes the Spark feel a bit like a go-kart. Throw this little guy into a set of bends at a moderate speed, and it’s actually fun to drive. After all, this is a 2300-pound car, so it should feel agile. As we threaded the Spark through the streets and up into rolling hills near Novato, Calif., it was as though this Chevy was channeling the sporty personality of the Honda Fit. And that’s high praise. Favorite Detail: Instead of the sportier Sonic’s gauge pod that houses an analog tach on the left and a digital speedo to the right, the Spark has the speedo on the left and an information cluster on the right. The Spark’s floating gauge pod is fun to use and looks cool too. A car like the Spark can’t take itself too seriously. It has to have fun touches like this. Driver’s Grievance: As good as the Spark is for a $13,000 car, we’d hoped for better fuel economy—everyone who sees the Spark will assume this micromachine returns 50 mpg. Although 38-mpg highway is excellent when that figure corresponds to that of a family sedan, it’s not too impressive on a car of this size. And it’s the same fuel economy than the much older Smart delivers. Boo. Perhaps GM will put a small hybrid powertrain in a Spark that could deliver numbers in the 50s.Bottom Line: The Spark is clearly the most practical minicar in the segment. It conveys a sense of lighthearted fun as you slice though city traffic. Compared with Chevy’s larger Sonic, the Spark is clearly a level down in terms of ride, handling, isolation, and power. But for less than $13,000, the Spark is a solid deal.

Chevrolet Continues to Support Breast Cancer Fight
This October’s events include employee- and dealership-sponsored fund-raising walks; a Chevrolet Certified Service matching rebate contribution program; appearances by a specially themed pink Camaro SS pace car and USAC National Midget Car; and test-drive contributions at selected Southern Women’s Shows. Additional Chevrolet activities will be announced in October.
The towers of GM’s Renaissance Center world headquarters in Detroit will once again be lit with bands of pink to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Even the all-new Chevrolet Spark will join in the fight. A special “Pink Out” Spark is designed to honor breast cancer survivors and supporters. It wears a production Techno Pink exterior finish and is embellished with custom pink elements inside and out. The “Pink Out” Spark will visit selected community walks throughout the month.
Last year with Chevrolet’s support, the American Cancer Society raised $1,079,633 in contributions to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The money helps fund research, wellness and breast cancer awareness education, and support for breast cancer patients and their families.
“The generosity of our employees, dealers and customers shows how everyday heroes can unite to make a difference in eradicating a disease impacting 1.5 million people,” said Don Johnson, vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “For the second year, we are committed to support the American Cancer Society in continuing its fight for more birthdays.”
Johnson will lead Chevrolet’s involvement in Detroit’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk that begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 in downtown Detroit.
“The American Cancer Society is thrilled to have the support of Chevrolet and General Motors nationwide to help us lead the fight against breast cancer,” said Jill Elder, vice president, American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division. “One in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer reaches out to the American Cancer Society for support. The contributions of General Motors and Chevrolet help make it possible to do the most for people with breast cancer today and enable us to continue the great work we’re doing to find cures to end the disease tomorrow.”

Chevrolet ends Avalanche production with a special Black Diamond edition
Originally presented in concept form at the 2000 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Avalanche and its badged engineered clone, the Cadillac Escalade EXT, were created off the Suburban GMT800 platform. The Avalanche proved to be so unique that it was named Motor Trend Magazine’s Truck of the Year for 2002.
Among its unusual features includes a ‘midgate’ which allows an expanded cargo area by folding down the rear seats and mid-gate and removing a rear glass panel, opening the cab to the elements. In addition to creating thermoclines in the cab as air-conditioning and heating fought the great outdoors, early midgate systems had problems with leaks, making the Avalanche and Escalade easily accessable to thieves.
Another significant problem was the unsightly bleaching of the applied body cladding. Shortly after its debut, cosmetic problems with the body cladding started to appear. Exposure to heat and sunlight over time created a chalky faded appearance. It was especially noticeable on the cargo bed panels and sail-panel windows. Complaints resulted in GM trying a product called ArmorDillo, which temporarily restored the cladding for a period of about 6 months. Realizing this was not a permanent solution, GM, with Gatorback Coatings, jointly developed a coating that could be applied to the cladding to restore it to a like-new shine. This product was designed to etch into the plastic and bond a new layer of tinted acrylic over the faded plastic. Customers under factory warranty could have the cladding restored under GM TSB:04-08-111-001C. With all the technological issues, plus buyer’s negative reaction to the cladding, GM offered a delete option which first appeared on the 2003 Avalanche. For the 2007 update the cladding was discontinued altogether.
The Chevrolet Avalanche was one of the earliest forays into re-inventing the traditional pickup truck. While maintaining a traditional truck image it capabilities was more versatile for the person buying it for personal use more than work – a lifestyle truck more than a work truck. However more simplistic and variations followed the Avalanche’s lead, such as the 2001 Ford F-150 SuperCrew, followed by the 2002 Dodge Ram Quad Cab and others.
The Avalanche was intended to help General Motors end Ford’s long reign as the best selling pickup. While aggregate sales of the Avalanche, Escalade, Silverado and GMC Sierra often exceeded sales of the F-150, the Avalanche itself was usually more successful in cannibalizing Silverado sales than generating conquests from Ford and Dodge.
Through March 2012 Chevrolet has sold more than 589,719 Avalanches. Sales peaked at 93,482 in 2003 then gradually decline from there. Despite a 2007 redesign sales plummeted by 37.0 percent in 2008, followed by a complete off the cliff nosedive in 2009, with sales totaling 16,432. However in its defense sales of all trucks and SUVs were in the toilet during this time due to the start of the economical collapse with over four buck a gallon gasoline.
With automotive industry back to a point of stabilization sales have actually risen, but not to the detriment of Silverado and Sierra crew cab sales. So with that the market can no longer justify the development of a replacement. GM’s other truck models, which include the Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the GMC Sierra and Yukon/XL are scheduled to receive a complete update, debuting as early 2014 models.
Looking back the Avalanche and Escalade had a positive impact on the full-size pickup market, making the crew cab body style more popular than previously was the case. Crew cabs currently account for a majority of full-size pickup sales. They’ve become popular with families whose needs seating capacity far outweigh a pickup’s utilitarian usefulness.
As expressed best by Mike Clawson, Avalanche program marketing manager, “We know there are many Avalanche enthusiasts among Chevy customers. The Black Diamond Avalanche is our way of saying ‘Thank you’ and making it just a little more attractive to own one more Avalanche.”

2013 Chevrolet Spark: Small and sensible wins the race
The city’s streets were equally bollixed in response to a presidential motorcade winding through town.
I was grateful for the car I was driving, the 2013 Chevrolet Spark 2LT mini-hatchback, finally brought to the United States by General Motors.
The front-wheel-drive Spark has been a mainstay of urban motorists worldwide for five years now. Previously sold as the Matiz, it is a product of GM-Daewoo in South Korea.
At this writing, some 600,000 Spark/Matiz models have been sold globally — the Philippines, Europe, South America.
The car is being brought to the United States in the wake of the demise of another GM-Daewoo automobile, the largely unheralded Chevrolet Aveo.
But here’s betting that the Spark will be a success. Here’s why:
“Downsizing” is no longer a dirty word in America. For many of us, it is a matter of necessity, especially among young people still struggling to find a safe place in a wobbly national economy.
The Spark is affordable, starting at $12,245 for the base model and rising to $13,745 for the Spark 1LT with Bluetooth connectivity or $15,045 for the top-of-the-line Spark 2LT.
Affordable, in this case, does not mean cheaply assembled, poorly designed or unsafe.
The Spark — 14 inches shorter than the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and nearly four inches shorter than the Fiat 500 — is a well-constructed piece, tiny on the outside but big enough to accommodate four adults who can enter the car through its four side doors.
There are 10 air bags, including front-passenger knee bolsters, to enhance the chances of escaping a crash with minor injuries. In the event that a crash occurs, the Spark comes with a standard six-month subscription to GM’s OnStar emergency communications system to help get rescue officials to you quickly.
You’ll have to buy, or have access to, an iPhone with this car. At least, after driving it for a while, you’ll probably want an iPhone. The Spark’s infotainment and operational systems, including door locks, music and navigation, are all designed to be integrated with and operated through your iPhone.
Here’s hoping that GM will see the common sense of that design, especially for navigation, and start putting it in all the company’s cars and trucks. There is nothing more disconcerting than climbing behind the wheel of an expensive automobile that has a fixed onboard navigation system that is already obsolete. That won’t happen with iPhone navigation systems, which are constantly being updated.
I have left driving impressions for last this week for the simple reason that you don’t buy a Spark to drive fast. You get it to maneuver through crowded city streets — and stay away from gasoline pumps.
Let’s be real. The Spark, as presented here in 2LT format, has a 1.2-liter in-line four-cylinder engine that produces 85 horsepower and 82 foot-pounds of torque. It is not the least bit speedy. It is agile.
The Spark is a narrow, lightweight car (2,269 pounds). It can scoot through the most congested traffic, quickly occupying spaces ignored by or unusable for larger vehicles. It is fast enough to get out of its own way and avoid other calamities in an urban setting.
On a highway, such as the Palisades Parkway heading north toward my oldest daughter’s home in Cornwall, N.Y., the Spark is a right-lane car. Keep it out of the left lane, which is meant for faster and passing vehicles. Before revving it up to highway speeds, select some nice music played at reasonably high volume. You’ll need it. The little car is a virtual noise box at 70 mph.
