2014 Chevrolet Spark to get CVT in mid-summer

Autoguide reports that the four-speed automatic gearbox will never be offered again in this little hatchback in the future and will be replaced with the CVT. Spark with CVT is expected to deliver improved fuel economy at 38 mpg highway, according to the report.

Regardless of the rumors, a GM spokesman has confirmed about this plan and he said that this four-door hatchback will get a CVT in mid-summer, no longer uses a four-speed automatic.
However, General Motors is still shy to reveal EPA-estimated fuel economy on the CVT variant. The current Spark is powered by a 1.25-liter DOHC VVT four-cylinder engine (Standard Ecotec) that can develop up to 84 horsepower (64 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 83 lb-ft (113 Nm) of torque at 4,200 rpm.

This four-cylinder engine is available exclusively with a standard five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for the Spark with a manual gearbox is rated at 32/38/34 mpg (city/highway/combined). While the automatic model has fuel economy ratings of 28/37/32 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Marketing manager gives exclusive 2014 Camaro SS walk around

2014_chevrolet_camaro_ss_video_shot

John Fitzpatrick Chevrolet Marketing Manager performance cars gave an exclusive walk around of the 2014 Camaro SS with the RS package and gives us highlights of the new features. While all the attention at the 2013 New York International Auto Show was on the new 2014 Z28, the Camaro SS still has some changes for the Camaro marketing manager to talk about. But will the changes be enough to get performance fans excited?

Fitzpatrick starts at the front on the candy apple red 2014 SS RS coupe. He begins by highlighting all the new features and discussing the styling and performance enhancements for the 2014 model year. The design team has two objectives as they gave a mild refresh of the 2014 Camaro. The objectives were to differentiate between the V6 and V8 models, and to add more flair to to the RS package.

A few new design elements

Many of the styling elements of the Camaro Zl1 can be seen incorporated into the SS. The Camaro marketing manager makes note that the new hood extractor on the SS is functional and similar to the one featured on the 2014 ZL1. Its function is to bring in air to the engine compartment and cool the 6.2-liter V8 engine before exiting below. Also on the front of the new SS is a new lower opening grille also similar to the ZL1 and it also receives silver trim added to the top of the grille for extra flair. The new model SS keeps the halo ring headlights from the previous year and functional foglamps have been added for the first time.

John Fitzpatrick moves to the back of the new red SS and points out the “striking” differences on the back of the car. He points out that the thing people will notice immediately are the new taillamp. The two lens were brought into one lens across the back of the car. Buyers who order the RS package will get new LED lamps that will further differentiate the sporty package.

New seats for the interior

While the 2014 SS model doesn’t get any changes to the interior, Fitzpatrick does say that with the introduction of the ne w2014 Z28, Chevrolet was able to bring optional Recaro performance sport seats into the SS for the first time. He says it’s for buyers who will take the SS to the track. Are there more changes coming to the Camaro or is this all Chevrolet has to offer?

No changes to the powertrain

The refreshed Camaro SS is powered by the same 6.2-liter V8, mated with the standard six-speed transmission. It pumps out 426 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Chevrolet still offers the six-speed automatic transmission with Active Fuel Management, which offers 24 mpg highway but delivers only 400 horsepower.

The Mustang fighter also comes with Launch control on the manual transmission SS that helps control wheel spin for faster 0-60 times. TAPshift manual controls on the automatic SS gives drivers more control over gear selection for more spirited driving. Camaro SS still comes with a performance-tuned suspension with tuned stabilizer dampers for improved handling in the corners. 20” wheels are wrapped in Pirelli PZero performance rubber and Brembo brakes are standard.

The two minute video below by Chevrolets John Fitzpatrick is supposed to get us excited about the newly refreshed 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS with the RS package. But the Marketing Manager of performance cars at Chevrolet doesn’t seem all that excited about the shiny red Camaro. Maybe it’s an indication of what performance fans will feel too when they see the new changes. Chevrolet will need to do a lot more than make a few cosmetic changes to keep up with the new 2015 Ford Mustang when it arrives next year.

First production 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible auctioned for a cool million

2014-chevrolet-c7-corvette-convertible-geneva-2013---01-opt

While the Geneva Motor Show C7 prototype is pictured above (it also was shown at Barrett-Jackson), Hendrick won rights to the first retail production model (VIN undetermined at this time), allowing him to choose both color and options before his V8 sports car rolls off the assembly line in the near future. Hopefully, by the time that happens, we will all know more about its soft convertible top, double-bubble tonneau and the mechanism that opens and lowers the fully automatic roof at speeds upwards of 30 mph.

It is worth mentioning that proceeds from the sale of this first C7 droptop will benefit the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer institute, one of 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States that strives to prevent, detect and eradicate all forms of cancer. The General Motors Foundation is a longtime supporter of Karmanos, with nearly $6 million in support over the last 15 years.

2014 Chevy Silverado has fuel economy surprise and new features customers will love

The 2014 Chevy Silverado has been redesigned by GM and the focus is on fuel efficiency, power, and value. The last two of those characteristics have long been pick-up truck traits, but lately, every vehicle has to have a strong focus on improving fuel efficiency and Chevy is making strides in that direction. Chevy has also upped the ante in cost of ownership and convenience.

2014 Chevy Silverado Fuel Efficiency
The 2014 Silverado is able to achieve up to an estimated 23 mpg highway – with a V8 in 2WD trim. That range of fuel efficiency is new for trucks. In fact, compared to the outgoing Toyota Highlander in its popular V6 and AWD configuration, the Silverado with a V8 and 4WD has the same highway fuel economy at 22 mpg. Chevy makes the bold claim that the V8 Silverado is more fuel efficient than the Ford F-150 with the EcoBoost V6. The Silverado uses many different technologies to achieve this, but its cylinder deactivation is the real key. It uses only 4 of the 8 cylinders in its EcoTec3 engine when cruising at low load, highway speeds.

2014 Chevy Silverado Drivetrains

Like most automakers, GM has new names for the engines in its line-up and the 2014 Silverado’s engines are dubbed EcoTec3. The rumors that GM consider “Big ‘n Thirsty” and “Carbon Shooter” are totally unfounded. These names give a pleasant environmentally friendly tag that is much more palatable than Honda’s “Earth Dreams.” The most efficient EcoTec3 engine is the 4.3 liter V6. The volume engine will be the 5.3 liter V8 mentioned above, and the big daddy is the 6.2 liter V8. Hybrid drivetrains were dropped last year due to complete disregard by the buying public. The new 5.3 liter engine will have 355 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. Chevy considers this to be class competitive with Ford’s very popular 3.5 liter twin turbo EcoBoost engine that has both more power and more torque, but not much more. The transmission is a six-speed automatic. Commenting on the drivetrains in the new Silverado Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer for Silverado said “Silverado’s available 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 gives customers the best of both worlds. Customers get the proven power and dependability of a V-8 truck engine, with better fuel economy than a leading competitor’s smaller turbocharged V-6.” Yes it can tow the same 11,500 pounds of giant boat or work trailer that the F-150 can.

New 2014 Silverado Features and Value Items
In addition to the fuel economy gains and the new slightly different look, the Silverado added a stronger quieter cabin. The way that was achieved is interesting. Folks using the truck as a work vehicle (let’s not pretend that is what all buyers use trucks for) will be happy with the new CornerStep bumper and standard rail protectors for the bed box. We hate to point out the obvious, but a lot of trucks have that spot on the bumper damaged by turning a trailer too sharply. Maybe Chevy has that problem sorted.

In order to boost the value of its trucks, Chevy will now offer free maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles. That includes all the things in the owner’s manual required and covers the first four scheduled visits. This is something one might expect from a German luxury automaker, not a domestic pickup truck manufacturer and it may just start a trend. Would anyone like to bet that the 5th scheduled maintenance visit will be a wopper of a wallet hit? Please pardon the cynicism, but we have noticed a huge coincidence with oil changes jumping from 3,000 to 10,000 miles or more when automakers start including oil changes in the car’s price.

2014 Chevy Silverado Pricing
The regular cab 2014 Silverado will start at just $24,585. That does not include the dealership’s “Doc” fees or other add on fees and taxes. According to the Chevy “build your own” website the 2013 Silverado’s MSRP including destination freight charge would be $25,570. So unless we are comparing the base trucks wrong the new models at first seem to be less expensive. However, Chevy is offering “$2,500 cash back” on the 2013s now. So in the actual dealership it would seem the buy price will be less for a 2013 than the coming 2014. Almost nobody will pay that for a Silverado. 2WD base regular cabs are rare. We configured a 2013 Silverado Crew Cab with short box, bedliner, trailer package, bucket seats and in LT mid-level trim and came up with an MSRP in the low $41K range. Expect the 2014 to be very close in price to that popular configuration.

Great job team, we received a 5-star review on DealerRater!

Dealerrater

"I think this was one of the best car sales experiences I have ever had. I have been buying GM products for 32 years and have met many high pressure sales people. Cindy was very friendly, gracious and never pushed at all. She went out of her way to make sure my questions were answered and made me feel at ease! So many dealers push push and then push the warranties and extras to a point where it turns people off. Not polar. They tell you stuff is available but don't bury you in offers. I had a dealer once push the extended warranty so hard that I asked them if they had any faith in their product!!! The service crew did a great job cleaning and prep'ing the car before we took it home. The followup has been great as well. They don't forget you after you walk out the door. Great job Polar!"  -- Customer
